The North-American Interfraternity Conference is pleased to announce the dates and location for the 2011 IFC Academy.
The Academy will be held on January 22, 2011 in Indianapolis, Indiana at the Indianapolis Downtown Hilton.
The fee for Academy will remain at $135 and includes all Academy materials, lunch, and dinner.

Registration details

Academy Goals:
This year represents the seventh year of the IFC Academy. The NIC believes that part of our commitment to our member fraternities lies in Advocating on behalf of the fraternity movement, Collaborating with our partners; including other umbrella groups, higher education associations, and industry leaders, and Educating our members about trends, norms, and best-practices throughout the Greek world.

We believe that IFC’s can benefit by hearing from fraternity executives, NIC professional staff, attorneys, and other industry leaders about how they can be a values-based organization that is truly advocating for the needs of fraternity life on their campus. The outcomes of attendance at Academy:

An understanding of the NIC Standards and how they influence IFC operations

Benchmarks to measure your successes on campus

Tools to assess how you should be responding to the needs of your member chapters.

A renewed enthusiasm for advocating for the needs of the fraternity community on your campus.

Who Should Attend?
In working with the undergraduate leaders and campus advisors who have attended the program in the past, we know that the Academy experience provides valuable information and lessons that can be easily implemented on campus. We have intentionally kept the registration fee to the minimum in order to allow for more participation from councils. We encourage you to send as many IFC leaders as you can, since past graduates have indicated that the change process is easier when more people have heard the message and bought into the change initiative.

IFC Presidents – For any IFC President who has ever wondered what their role is truly supposed to be, the Academy answers that question fully.

IFC Public Relations/Recruitment/Marketing Chair – You have an invaluable job. The marketing of fraternity life and the benefits of joining a Greek organization is one area that Academy will focus on in a way completely unlike anything attempted in past years. This focus on marketing and public relations help in many areas across our 800 campuses.

IFC Judicial Officers – The Academy helps you define the council’s role for holding member fraternities accountable to community standards.

Chapter Presidents/Delegates – The IFC exists to serve the needs of its members. As chapter leaders, you should have a clear understanding of what your IFC can and should be providing

Campus Advisors – You’ve wanted to created positive change with your council. You work tirelessly to advance the fraternity community. IFC Academy is your ally and we appreciate and encourage your involvement.

Timing and Location
The timing of the Academy is designed to reach the most people at the beginning of their terms. Our research indicates that 65% of councils elect officers in the fall term. The late January date was selected based on feedback from past graduates. They say the timing allows the council to return to campus and have enough time to start the conversations and implement changes.

Indianapolis will allow us to use the resources of the many Inter/National Headquarters and staff that are located here. We intend to include many executive directors in our programming. This may be the first time that many of the officers have the opportunity to visit their headquarters and talk with the staff. Councils could arrange to visit headquarters on either Friday or Sunday.

While councils are at the Academy, your attention and focus will be fully on the important issues facing your community. However, the downtown location offers you the opportunity to explore within walking distance of the hotel some of the unique characteristics of our great city, such as the NCAA Hall of Champions, Circle Center, and other cultural outlets.

(taken from the Fall 2010 Back to School e-mail)

It is with great excitement that we welcome our collegiate members back for the fall 2010 academic term!

Whether your summer months have been used to travel to new places, to return home to friends and family, or even to stay on campus to continue your intellectual development, we are looking forward now to engaging all our members in furthering Phi Kappa Theta’s Mission.

This summer’s Leadership Institute drew record attendance: more than 120 collegiate members – representing 47 of our 48 collegiate chapters – participated in our development workshops and programs. Phi Kappa Theta continues to increase its ability to provide a consistent level of opportunity for development to its membership.

While we celebrate the fact that 98% of our collegiate chapters were represented, the total number of collegiate attendees accounts for less than 10% of our current collegiate membership! If the active development of our members is at the core of our Mission, this percentage is simply unacceptable.

For this reason, Phi Kappa Theta has focused on the following goals for the 2010-2011 development year:

To increase the number of alumni volunteers serving in mentoring roles to our collegiate members. Resources have been allocated to recruit, train, and support key volunteers, who are essential to the success of Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity.

To increase the developmental opportunities provided to our collegiate members throughout the year. This means Phi Kappa Theta will create a balanced development plan that will include regionally based conferences, chapter-specific workshops, and web-based seminars and training. These tactics will all be utilized to deliver on the strategy of ensuring that active development truly is Phi Kappa Theta’s culture.

These two goals have been set for 2010-2011. Throughout the year, we will share in The Kappa Quarterly how Phi Kappa Theta how we are performing relative to these goals, and also how we are performing within each of the five areas of development.

We embrace the challenge we have set for ourselves in the next phase of our journey – one that will lead us to become a premier human development organization inspiring confidence in our men through real-world experience.

Yours in Service,

Robert Riggs
Executive Vice President

The Achieve Application begins its second year this week. As we move forward through the next few months, members will see some improvements in the Accreditation section of the application. Contrary to last year, every single accreditation expectation will be linked to specific chapter events so you will only need to enter your information one time and in one location. In addition, an automatic scoring component has been added to each question. Members can see the scoring rubric as well as the preliminary score that has been earned based on what has been submitted. All chapter accreditation submissions will be assessed during the month of December by the Executive Offices Staff. Preliminary scores will be altered based upon the review of the documentation and comments will be left in the system that all members will be able to view. This will allow the chapter to see feedback half way through the academic year on their progress and seek guidance and suggestions on areas to improve upon before Achieve closes for final scoring on June 1, 2011. It is also possible that staff members may periodically review content, update scores, and leave comments at other times during the year.

There will be two webinars that will be held for any member who wishes to preview the system before it opens. Dates and times of the webinars in addition to the Achieve system re-opening are listed below. Please follow the link below each webinar to register to attend. Additional webinars will be scheduled as more components are added to the system.

Webinar #1: Monday, September 6, 2010 – 8:00pm EST

Webinar #2: Tuesday, September 7, 2010 – 3:30pm EST

Achieve Reopens: Tuesday, September 7, 2010 – 5:00pm EST

Phase two of Achieve, which includes the membership management side of the system, should be ready by the end of October. What does this mean to you? Most significantly, it means online reporting. The new phase means that your individual and chapter profiles will store more data than you currently see. Chapter officers will be able to report new members, update their rosters and officer lists, and report status changes at any time. As October grows nearer, you will be notified of webinars that we will be holding to educate members about the system and how to use it before phase two is launched.

As a reminder, your username is your last name followed by your member id and your password is the word “pass” followed by your member id. If, last year, you changed your password to something different, it has been reset. If you have any questions regarding Achieve or accreditation, please contact Anita Kerlin, Director of Member Development at anita@phikaps.org. If you need to request your member id, please e-mail executiveoffices@phikaps.org.

Allyson’s primary role will be to work with Phi Kappa Theta’s Leadership to manage the National Foundation’s Annual Fund efforts. In addition, Allyson will work closely to grow the engagement of alumni and collegiate members by supporting Phi Kappa Theta’s communication efforts and regionally based groups throughout the year.

“Phi Kappa Theta continues to invest resources into further developing our national and regionally based networks.” said Executive Vice President, Robert Riggs. ”By bringing on Allyson full time, we will now have the support staff that we’ve needed to assist us in building those networks successfully. We look forward to continuing to serve our members to the best of our abilities.”

Allyson graduated in May of 2001 from Centre College with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. As a charter member of the Gamma Psi chapter of the Delta Omicron International Music Fraternity, she remains active in music through her church’s music program, both with voice and flute.

Phi Kappa Theta actively develops men to effectively lead and passionately serve their society, fraternity and God. Phi Kappa Theta recently celebrated the 120th anniversary of its founding and the 50th anniversary of the merger of two fraternities – Theta Kappa Phi and Phi Kappa. The United Fraternity has nearly 1,500 collegiate members and more than 30,000 living alumni.

The event was held at the scenic Bristow Manor Golf Course in Bristow, VA, and was a great success. A great time was had by all with brothers from multiple Phi Kappa Theta chapters, family members, and friends, all in attendance. The course was pristine, the staff warm, and Club Manager Chris Wyant, made all participants feel at home on the course. The fund-raising portion was successful and we were able to raise a generous donation for the U.S.O., to be made in the name of our fallen brother Tom Brown, who was killed in Iraq in 2008.

We are looking forward to planning the 2nd Annual Golf Tournament next year, and we encourage brothers in the D.C. Metro area who would like to attend, or help with the planning to become involved with the association. We can be reached through out website, www.PKTDC.org, or by email at: cfmessina@hotmail.com. We look forward to seeing you all again at next year’s tournament, and hope those of you who were not able to participate this year will come out next Spring.

Fraternally,

Chris Messina
President
Washington DC Area Phi Kappa Theta Alumni Association
